Counting Calories? Try These Healthy Chinese Food Options

Counting calories? Ugh. I know the feeling. So am I. As I just ate an entire piece of Cheesecake. People tend to think that all Chinese dishes are friend or drenched in sauce, therefore, off limits! That's not true! Here, we have some healthy Chinese dishes that can give you the taste you're craving with the heath benefits you want.

Hot & Sour Soup or Wonton Soup: A cup of one of these savory starters will only set you back about 80 to 100 calories. An added appetite-squashing attribute: research has found that if you eat a broth-based soup before a meal you end up eating less food in total.

Veggie Spring Rolls: For a light appetizer, steer clear of fried eggs rolls and opt for veggie spring rolls instead, which contain about 80 calories per roll on average.

Steamed Vegetable Dumplings: One steamed veggie dumpling contains a lean 40 calories. Enjoy two delicious dumplings before your main meal for only 80 calories.

The Buddha's Delight: Loaded with steamed veggies and protein-packed tofu. This delightfully low-calorie dish will leave you satisfied on as little as 200 calories.

Chicken with Broccoli: One cup of chicken and broccoli has a reasonable 280 calories. To lower the calorie count even further, request the sauce on the side and use just a little. A broccoli bonus: this cruciferous vegetable is one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. It's chock-full of vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, fiber and antioxidants.

Shrimp with Lobster Sauce: Shrimp is a super-lean protein and although lobster sauce sounds sinfully decadent, it actually only has about 50 calories for one-fourth of a cup. This entire dish contains only about 450 calories--not too shabby!

Shrimp with Garlic Sauce: A full order of this dish houses about 700 calories, and if you split it in half and share it with a friend or save some for a second meal, your total calorie count stays around 350. Plus, it's very filling because of all the fiber from the veggies and lean protein from the shellfish.

Steamed Shrimp or Chicken with Vegetables: When they're not breaded and deep-fried, both shrimp and chicken are lean sources of high-quality protein. Protein helps you stay full for longer and is important for building and maintaining muscle mass.

Any Steamed Veggies & Lean Protein:  Any dish consisting of steamed vegetables and lean protein (chicken, scallops, shrimp, fish, lean beef or tofu) with sauce on the side is a low-calorie choice. It'll fill you up without filling you out.

Oh! Don't Forego the Fortune Cookie!!!! Enjoy a perfectly-portioned, classic, after-meal treat for a mere 30 calories. I can never have just one though!

Health Benefits of Chinese Food

It has been said for years that Japanese food is some of the most healthy you will ever find. The problem is, actually finding it. Chinese food is easier to find and has plenty of health benefits too!

Chopsticks may help keep portions down since you put less food in your mouth than you would with, say, a fork. Chopsticks help people slow down, and when you slow down, your body’s satiety signals are given time to do their job.

Soup, which is almost always served, is also a satiety promoter. It's been shown that eating a broth-based soup before a meal can reduce food intake by about 20%.

If you can love  brown rice, more power to you. With Chinese food, you’re eating loads of vegetables, ginger and possibly mushrooms with your carbs. More importantly, the meat will lower your glycemic load, and the fibers in your greens will keep your blood-sugar levels balanced. This means a more sustained feeling of fullness and energy.

If you're looking to stay on track for your weight loss plan, Chinese food is an excellent start! Come see E Hur Wei in Nashville for some of the best Chinese cuisine in town!

We're located at 7075 Memphis-Bristol Hwy. Nashville, TN 37211.

Now, the pork can be substituted by other ingredients like chicken, beef or pork ribs.

2. Gong Bao Chicken: This is a famous Sichuan-style specialty, popular with both Chinese and foreigners. The major ingredients are diced chicken, dried chili, and fried peanuts.People in Western countries have created a Western-style gong bao chicken, for which the diced chicken is covered with cornstarch, and vegetables, sweet and sour sauce and mashed garlic are added.

3. Ma Po Tofu: Ma po tofu is one of the most famous dishes in Chuan Cuisine with a history of more than 100 years. Ma describes a spicy and hot taste which comes from pepper powder, one kind of condiment usually used in Chuan Cuisine. The milky tofu is enriched with brownish red ground beef and chopped green onion.

4. Wontons: Since the Tang Dynasty (618–907), it has been a custom for people to eat wontons on the winter solstice. The most versatile shape of a wonton is simple a right triangle, similar to Italian tortellini. Wontons are commonly boiled and served in soup or sometimes deep-fried. The filling of wontons can be minced pork or diced shrimp.

5. Dumplings: With a long history of more than 1,800 years, dumplings are a traditional food widely popular in North China. Dumplings consist of minced meat and chopped vegetables wrapped into a thin piece of dough skin.Popular fillings are mince pork, diced shrimp, ground chicken, beef, and vegetables. They can be cooked by boiling, steaming, or frying. Dumplings are a traditional dish eaten on Chinese New Year’s Eve.

6. Chow Mein: The "Chow mein" is the Cantonese pronunciation of the Chinese characters above, which means stir-fried noodles. Generally speaking, this stir-fried dish consists of noodles, meat (usually chicken, beef, shrimp, or pork), onions and celery.

7. Peking Roasted Duck: Peking duck is a famous dish from Beijing, enjoying world fame, and considered as one of China’s national dishes.Peking duck is savored for its thin and crispy skin. The Sliced Peking duck is often eaten with pancakes, sweet bean sauce, or soy with mashed garlic.

8. Spring Rolls: Spring rolls are a Cantonese dim sum of cylindrical shape. The filling of spring rolls could be vegetables or meat, and the taste could be either sweet or savory. After fillings are wrapped in spring roll wrappers, the next step is frying. Then the spring rolls are given their golden yellow color.

Chinese Dishes you MUST Try!

There are some dishes that you just absolutely HAVE to try! Here are a few Chinese dishes that you absolutely need to try! Venture outside of your comfort zone!

Dan Dan Mein (Dan Dan Noodles)
Original versions of the dish start with warm, long, fresh noodles piled over chile oil. Many recent takes finish the dish off with minced pork and pickled vegetables (ya cai) such as mustard greens. Depending on the cook’s taste (and, of course, the customer's), other versions include peanut oil, peanuts, peanut butter, sesame paste, dark soy sauce, black Chinese vinegar, scallions and Sichuan peppers. Some versions are even served cold. The end goal of all of them: a slurpy, delicious and fortifying bowl of noodles.

Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings)
Steamed soup dumplings usually arrive in a group of 4 to 10 in a bamboo steamer basket. Dip the dumpling in the Chinese vinegar (usually provided), and when you bite into them, the pork broth, or “soup,” spills out into your Chinese spoon.

Char Siu Bao (Pork Buns)
Steamed, paper-white puffs of yeast-risen bread encase a glistening center of sugary barbecue pork chunks. The seasonings on the meat are sweet barbecue sauce styles which tends to lend an bright orange tinge to the paper-white bread surrounding it.

Shumai
One of the prettiest members of the dim sum family, these delicate, curly-edged bite-size dumplings show up often with pork or scallop, although they can also be found with spring garlic, shrimp, crab meat, and a range of other vegetarian and meat enhancements. A translucent piece of dough wraps around the fillings, forming a small package that is steamed to order.
