Counting Calories? Try These Healthy Chinese Food Options

Counting calories? Ugh. I know the feeling. So am I. As I just ate an entire piece of Cheesecake. People tend to think that all Chinese dishes are friend or drenched in sauce, therefore, off limits! That's not true! Here, we have some healthy Chinese dishes that can give you the taste you're craving with the heath benefits you want.

Hot & Sour Soup or Wonton Soup: A cup of one of these savory starters will only set you back about 80 to 100 calories. An added appetite-squashing attribute: research has found that if you eat a broth-based soup before a meal you end up eating less food in total.

Veggie Spring Rolls: For a light appetizer, steer clear of fried eggs rolls and opt for veggie spring rolls instead, which contain about 80 calories per roll on average.

Steamed Vegetable Dumplings: One steamed veggie dumpling contains a lean 40 calories. Enjoy two delicious dumplings before your main meal for only 80 calories.

The Buddha's Delight: Loaded with steamed veggies and protein-packed tofu. This delightfully low-calorie dish will leave you satisfied on as little as 200 calories.

Chicken with Broccoli: One cup of chicken and broccoli has a reasonable 280 calories. To lower the calorie count even further, request the sauce on the side and use just a little. A broccoli bonus: this cruciferous vegetable is one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. It's chock-full of vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, fiber and antioxidants.

Shrimp with Lobster Sauce: Shrimp is a super-lean protein and although lobster sauce sounds sinfully decadent, it actually only has about 50 calories for one-fourth of a cup. This entire dish contains only about 450 calories--not too shabby!

Shrimp with Garlic Sauce: A full order of this dish houses about 700 calories, and if you split it in half and share it with a friend or save some for a second meal, your total calorie count stays around 350. Plus, it's very filling because of all the fiber from the veggies and lean protein from the shellfish.

Steamed Shrimp or Chicken with Vegetables: When they're not breaded and deep-fried, both shrimp and chicken are lean sources of high-quality protein. Protein helps you stay full for longer and is important for building and maintaining muscle mass.

Any Steamed Veggies & Lean Protein:  Any dish consisting of steamed vegetables and lean protein (chicken, scallops, shrimp, fish, lean beef or tofu) with sauce on the side is a low-calorie choice. It'll fill you up without filling you out.

Oh! Don't Forego the Fortune Cookie!!!! Enjoy a perfectly-portioned, classic, after-meal treat for a mere 30 calories. I can never have just one though!

Now that you're aware of some fabulous Chinese dishes that won't have you on the treadmill an extra hour (I'm dreading tomorrow), come to E Hur Wei at 7075 Memphis-Bristol Hwy in Nashville!

Health Benefits of Chinese Food

It has been said for years that Japanese food is some of the most healthy you will ever find. The problem is, actually finding it. Chinese food is easier to find and has plenty of health benefits too!

Chopsticks may help keep portions down since you put less food in your mouth than you would with, say, a fork. Chopsticks help people slow down, and when you slow down, your body’s satiety signals are given time to do their job.

Soup, which is almost always served, is also a satiety promoter. It's been shown that eating a broth-based soup before a meal can reduce food intake by about 20%.

If you can love  brown rice, more power to you. With Chinese food, you’re eating loads of vegetables, ginger and possibly mushrooms with your carbs. More importantly, the meat will lower your glycemic load, and the fibers in your greens will keep your blood-sugar levels balanced. This means a more sustained feeling of fullness and energy.

If you're looking to stay on track for your weight loss plan, Chinese food is an excellent start! Come see E Hur Wei in Nashville for some of the best Chinese cuisine in town!

We're located at 7075 Memphis-Bristol Hwy. Nashville, TN 37211.

Chinese cuisine is one of the most important parts of Chinese culture! E Hur Wei in Nashville has you covered for some of the most popular Chinese dishes! Here are the 8 most popular Chinese dishes:

1. Sweet and Sour Pork: Sweet and sour pork has a bright orange-red color, and a delicious sweet and sour taste. At the very beginning there was only sweet and sour pork, but to meet demands, there have been some developments on this dish. Now, the pork can be substituted by other ingredients like chicken, beef or pork ribs.

2. Gong Bao Chicken: This is a famous Sichuan-style specialty, popular with both Chinese and foreigners. The major ingredients are diced chicken, dried chili, and fried peanuts.People in Western countries have created a Western-style gong bao chicken, for which the diced chicken is covered with cornstarch, and vegetables, sweet and sour sauce and mashed garlic are added.

3. Ma Po Tofu: Ma po tofu is one of the most famous dishes in Chuan Cuisine with a history of more than 100 years. Ma describes a spicy and hot taste which comes from pepper powder, one kind of condiment usually used in Chuan Cuisine. The milky tofu is enriched with brownish red ground beef and chopped green onion.

4. Wontons: Since the Tang Dynasty (618–907), it has been a custom for people to eat wontons on the winter solstice. The most versatile shape of a wonton is simple a right triangle, similar to Italian tortellini. Wontons are commonly boiled and served in soup or sometimes deep-fried. The filling of wontons can be minced pork or diced shrimp.

5. Dumplings: With a long history of more than 1,800 years, dumplings are a traditional food widely popular in North China. Dumplings consist of minced meat and chopped vegetables wrapped into a thin piece of dough skin.Popular fillings are mince pork, diced shrimp, ground chicken, beef, and vegetables. They can be cooked by boiling, steaming, or frying. Dumplings are a traditional dish eaten on Chinese New Year’s Eve.

6. Chow Mein: The "Chow mein" is the Cantonese pronunciation of the Chinese characters above, which means stir-fried noodles. Generally speaking, this stir-fried dish consists of noodles, meat (usually chicken, beef, shrimp, or pork), onions and celery.

7. Peking Roasted Duck: Peking duck is a famous dish from Beijing, enjoying world fame, and considered as one of China’s national dishes.Peking duck is savored for its thin and crispy skin. The Sliced Peking duck is often eaten with pancakes, sweet bean sauce, or soy with mashed garlic.

8. Spring Rolls: Spring rolls are a Cantonese dim sum of cylindrical shape. The filling of spring rolls could be vegetables or meat, and the taste could be either sweet or savory. After fillings are wrapped in spring roll wrappers, the next step is frying. Then the spring rolls are given their golden yellow color.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year falls on Thursday, February 19, 2015 this year. Did you know that Chinese New Year is the largest holiday traveled ever? In China, hundreds of millions of people travel home in what is considered the world's biggest annual human migration.

Approximately three billion trips will be made by plane, train and car over the 40-day period.

In China, the Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. Each year, the New Year is associated with one of the 12 zodiac animal signs. The 12 signs are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

This year is the year of the Goat; the eighth Chinese Zodiac.

The Chinese Zodiac Goat has the following symbolic meanings:

Chinese Dishes you MUST Try!

There are some dishes that you just absolutely HAVE to try! Here are a few Chinese dishes that you absolutely need to try! Venture outside of your comfort zone!

Dan Dan Mein (Dan Dan Noodles)
Original versions of the dish start with warm, long, fresh noodles piled over chile oil. Many recent takes finish the dish off with minced pork and pickled vegetables (ya cai) such as mustard greens. Depending on the cook’s taste (and, of course, the customer's), other versions include peanut oil, peanuts, peanut butter, sesame paste, dark soy sauce, black Chinese vinegar, scallions and Sichuan peppers. Some versions are even served cold. The end goal of all of them: a slurpy, delicious and fortifying bowl of noodles.

Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings)
Steamed soup dumplings usually arrive in a group of 4 to 10 in a bamboo steamer basket. Dip the dumpling in the Chinese vinegar (usually provided), and when you bite into them, the pork broth, or “soup,” spills out into your Chinese spoon.

Char Siu Bao (Pork Buns)
Steamed, paper-white puffs of yeast-risen bread encase a glistening center of sugary barbecue pork chunks. The seasonings on the meat are sweet barbecue sauce styles which tends to lend an bright orange tinge to the paper-white bread surrounding it.

Shumai
One of the prettiest members of the dim sum family, these delicate, curly-edged bite-size dumplings show up often with pork or scallop, although they can also be found with spring garlic, shrimp, crab meat, and a range of other vegetarian and meat enhancements. A translucent piece of dough wraps around the fillings, forming a small package that is steamed to order.

Brown Rice versus White Rice; A Healthy Debate

In our previous blog post, we discussed some healthy Chinese options for you at Nashville's E Hur Wei.  One of the biggest diet arguments when you're eating Chinese food stems from the question:

White Rice or Brown Rice? What about Fried Rice? Just... No. You know it's GOOD, but not healthy. But everyone loves fried rice!

What is the difference between brown and white rice? Aside from the obvious - color. A whole grain of rice has several layers. Only the outermost layer, the hull, is removed to produce what we call brown rice. This process is the least damaging to the nutritional value of the rice and avoids the unnecessary loss of nutrients that occurs with further processing (discussed below). If brown rice is further milled to remove the bran and most of the germ layer, the result is not only a whiter rice, but also a rice that has lost many more nutrients. At this point, however, the rice is still unpolished, and it takes polishing to produce the white rice we are used to seeing. Polishing removes the aleurone layer of the grain--a layer filled with health-supportive, essential fats. Because these fats, once exposed to air by the refining process, are highly susceptible to oxidation, this layer is removed to extend the shelf life of the product. The resulting white rice is simply a refined starch that has basically lost all of its original nutrients.

Fried rice is undeniably bad for you, setting you back 450 calories and 14 grams of fat. Brown rice is better, with only 215 calories and a generous 3.5 grams of fiber per cup. But even though it's trendy to avoid white rice because it's a high-glycemic carb, it's honestly not so bad.

Calorie for calorie, brown and white rice are about the same.

Brown rice is said to reduce diabetes risk while white rice has a few consequence that you may not be aware of. For example, the refining process of white rice includes loss of fiber, vitamins, magnesium and other minerals, lignans, phytoestrogens, and phytic acid, many of which may be protective factors for diabetes risk.

Eating brown rice is usually associated with a health-conscious lifestyle. However, if you're researching brown and white rice, you will find a ton of conflicting information. Some experts say that white rice is in fact healthier for you than brown rice while others swear by brown rice and it's health benefits.

Whichever you prefer, E Hur Wei can cater to your needs! We can be as health-conscious as you'd like with many healthy menu options including gluten-free! Come visit us and see why Yelp reviewers rave about our food! 7075 Memphis-Bristol Hwy.  Nashville, TN 37221 or call in a To-Go order at 615-673-1003.

Tips for Healthy Eating

Chinese food sure is tasty, but if you're on a diet, you might be thinking it's not the best choice for your caloric intake. E Hur Wei is here to guide you with some dining options that ARE healthy! Who said dieting had to be bland?

Anything steamed is obviously good, as is Jum (poached), Chu (broiled), Kow (roasted), Shu (barbecued), lightly stir-fried, dry stir-fried, or braised. If you're dieting, stay away from anything breaded, fried, or coated in flour. The best stuff is never good for you!

While dieting or watching your calories, avoid thick gravy or sauces made from sugar, flour, or cornstarch (such as those found on General Tso's or Sweet and Sour Pork). They're loaded with corn syrup. Instead, try a dish made with hot mustard sauce, hoisin sauce, or oyster sauce. Another tip with your sauces - always ask for "half sauce." That way, you get half the sauce—and half the calories—of what is normally used in the dish.

Try ordering your meal from E Hur Wei cooked in vegetable stock (a traditional Chinese style of cooking called "stock velveted") to reduce the calories in your dish by 150-300 and the fat by 15-30 grams.

If you're looking at dining at a delightful Chinese restaurant in Nashville, E Hur Wei is the way to go! We offer a large menu that caters to everyone! Gluten free? No problem! Gluten-Free Options

Finding safe and healthy options for eating out can be a tricky process, especially if you suffer from Celiacs disease - a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are crucial for keeping yourself healthy. While some people have no choice but to eat gluten-free food, others enjoy staying on a gluten-free diet.

While some people are concerned about the language barrier between themselves and the staff, Celiac Travel has made it easier with free restaurant cards that you can download and carry with you to give to your server which will help explain what you are looking for. For an example of a Chinese (Mandarin) restaurant card, click here for a free download.

If you enjoy Chinese cuisine in Nashville, but are on a gluten-free diet, E Hur Wei offers you a gluten-free menu.

Concerned about what is safe for you to eat? Here are a couple of my go-to "safe" options that are gluten-free. Mei fun, which are thin rice noodles and Chow fun, wide rice noodles, with chicken and veggies. Just be sure to ask that your rice noodles are not cooked with soy sauce!

E Hur Wei's gluten-free menu includes delicious dishes like Buddha's Delight, Shrimp and Scallops, Grilled Salmon and Vegetables, and Tofu Hot Pots just to name a few.

Tofu Hot Pot

Whether you're looking for traditional Chinese food in Nashville or gluten-free options, E Hur Wei is the place to go! All of our authentic dishes are cooked hot and fresh to order. We are located at the corner of Old Hickory Boulevard and Highway 70 in Bellevue.

Three Things You Didn't Know About Chinese Food

American Chinese food, like that sold at E Hur Wei, is ubiquitous in Nashville and Middle Tennessee. Actual Chinese food (sometimes called ancient Chinese food) is very different. Here are three things you didn't know about Chinese food in China.
It might go without saying, but there are lots and lots of different types of Chinese food. In Nashville and in Middle Tennessee in general tends to be Cantonese-style Chinese food. However, there are at least 15 regional types of Chinese food in China, if not many, many more.
MSG is a flavor in China
MSG has a pretty bad reputation in the US, but in fact it’s a natural flavoring in China, used to produce a rich umami flavor. In fact, a similar comparison to MSG would be cinnamon in the US: just another spice on the rack, albeit on that is used frequently.
Essentially unheard of in China, the fortune cookie originated in Japan, but it really hits its stride in the US. It's very rare to find one in Japan now.

There's three things you didn't know about Chinese food, and if you find yourself craving some spring rolls, then head over to E Hur Wei!

7075 Highway 70 S, Nashville, Tn 37221. They have great specials on so you'll get a great meal at a good price.

What’s In Chicken Teriyaki?

Chicken teriyaki (despite being Japanese) can probably be found on most Chinese food menus in most Chinese food restaurants in Nashville and Middle Tennessee. It’s become and Chinese food take-out staple, and an incredibly popular ‘Chinese’ food. But what’s actually in it? E Hur Wei, a local Chinese restaurant in Nashville, helped explain.
Teriyaki comes from Japan and refers to grilling food that’s been glazed in a sweet sauce. This sauce is what gives teriyaki flavor, and Chinese food restaurants in Middle Tennessee guard their sauce recipes extremely carefully. But at its core, teriyaki sauce is soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Mirin’s a bit like a rice-based port: a sugary liquid with a low alcohol content. In restaurants, teriyaki is usually fried over a high heat to properly glaze whatever the sauce is covering, and then sometimes finished in the oven. At home, because you’re not cooking for an entire restaurant, you have a little more leeway, and can bake the teriyaki for a less oily finish. There are dozens of teriyaki recipes out there to try yourself.
So if you’re craving some teriyaki chicken and can’t find a Chinese restaurant that has it, head over the E Hur Wei. It’s one of the best Chinese restaurants in town with great reviews and a diverse menu. It’s on 75 Hwy 70 S Nashville, 37209.

Qualities of a Perfect Chow Mein

Finding the perfect way to cook chow mein is not an easy task. You might slave away in your Nashville home trying to follow a Chinese food recipe that you just can’t seem to perfect. The secret is in the wok, but it’s difficult to say just what it is about the wok that makes it so special.
The experts at E Hur Wei recommend using a wok that has taken in many flavors over the years. A used wok has a certain edge to it that cannot be beat. You should cook the food on very high heat so that the outsides are becoming very crisp and the insides of the meat and vegetables are soft and tender.
If you are in the Nashville area and want a taste of perfection, the cooks at E Hur Wei can give you what you are craving. Once you have tried the food here, you will never want to make an attempt at cooking your own Chinese food again.

Visit the website to see the menu, and visit the restaurant at 7075 U.S. 70S, Nashville, Tennessee, 37221. There is a reason this restaurant is the go-to destination in Middle Tennessee.

Loving the Food at E Hur Wei

When foodies have their stomachs growling for Chinese food, it can be difficult to find a restaurant that sizzles with originality. The perfect dining area makes for ample opportunity to sit with friends and have some delectable cuisines to relish under the roof. After you have finished your plate at E Hur Wei, you will likely want to pack food to take to your Middle Tennessee home as well. In addition to the quality food, the staff is also attentive and efficient. No other restaurant in Nashville equals this location’s exotic nature.
Secret to the Best Stir Fry
One of the components that stands out from the rest at E Hur Wei is the restaurant’s stir fries. The secret to the best stir fry is in the equipment. The woks at E Hur Wei can churn out some of the best cuisine you have ever tasted. You need to come down to taste it for yourself to believe just how amazing it is. E Hur Wei is located at 7075 70S, Nashville Tennessee, 37221.

The Best Chinese Restaurant in Nashville

Several Chinese restaurants operate in Middle Tennessee’s principal city of Nashville. However, these restaurants basically serve the same menu items that majorly consists of pre-packaged vegetables that are steamed and sauced with very sweet condiments. That’s not the case at E Hur Wei, where the food is very fresh and the staff is pleasing and accommodating of all your needs. As opposed to the typical menu provided by most Chinese restaurants in Middle Tennessee, E Hur Wei has a host of traditional and not-so traditional favorites that are prepared in a much better way.

Residents of Nashville need to worry less about the times of operation. The restaurant is open Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. While in Middle Tennessee, you can stop at Nashville for lunch or dinner. The restaurant also features a full bar, and a kid-friendly environment. There is also lots of parking. This Chinese restaurant has some authentic items available on separate menus that are much better than anything in the area. You definitely have to give E Hur Wei a try. Visit the restaurant at 7075 Highway 70 S, Nashville, TN, 37221.
